Who Gets Left Out When We Talk About Professional Office Attire= ?

Office siren= this. Corpcore that.

IDK if you=E2=80=99= ve noticed, but it's harder than ever to dr= ess for work these days. Thanks to the r= ise of WFH, the casualization of =E2=80=9Cprofessional=E2=80=9D clothes bec= ame de rigueur as ma= ny of us traded our oversized blazers and stuffy dress pants for matching s= weatsuit sets.

But as more folks are being f= orced to return to the office, dress codes haven=E2=80=99t magically disapp= eared. We are still being told (and not told) what to wear to work=E2=80=94= whether it=E2=80=99s from the runway, your FYP, or your company=E2=80=99s H= R department.

When you think of a standard pr= ofessional work outfit for women, what comes to mind? Straight leg dress pa= nts, a structured, neutral blazer, maybe a blouse? Or a work-appropriate dr= ess that covers your shoulders and knees? What about flats or high heels?

But you know who gets left out of the professi= onal office attire equation? Anyone who isn=E2=80=99t cisgender, heterosexu= al, or able-bodied.

KT Forward, the director= of people, analytics, and insights at Feminuity, an H= R design consultancy, has felt ostracized by office dress codes.=C2=A0

=E2=80=9CBeing held within this binary is a huge = challenge,=E2=80=9D they explain. =E2=80=9CI=E2=80=99m happiest in a button= -down, with a jacket=E2=80=94but as a short, fat human, it is incredibly di= fficult to find clothing that fits and feels good. For years, I put on a dr= ess because it was easier, codified as more appropriate and more profession= al by others. It was uncomfortable, but it meant getting the praise and app= roval of my peers and those in positions of power and authority. The discom= fort goes beyond a resistance to wearing feminine-coded clothing; it meant = literally covering my skin in a way that made me more palatable to others.= =E2=80=9D

If this is the case, should office= dress codes be canceled for good? Unfortunately, it=E2=80=99s not that sim= ple.

How to Protect = Your Finances Before Saying "I Do"

From the impact of caregiving on lifetime earnings to the case for prenups= (and postnups), Katie Gatti Tassin, a.k.a. Money With Katie= , explains what every woman should know before making big life decisions= . =F0=9F=91=B6=F0=9F=92=8D

=E2=80=9COne of my favorite divorce attorneys (yes, I have a favorite divorce att= orney) says: =E2=80=9CMarriage is the most legally significant thing you=E2= =80=99ll ever do other than die, and you don=E2=80=99t get so much as a lea= flet.=E2=80=9D It=E2=80=99s a lifelong, legally binding contract between yo= u, the state, and another person=E2=80=A6and there=E2=80=99s nothing to rea= d before you sign it!

So, there=E2=80=99s one big rule to keep in m= ind that=E2=80=99ll save you a lot of trouble later: Anything that eithe= r of you earn, buy, or borrow after the date of marriage is almost certainl= y going to be treated like marital property=C2=A0that belongs to both of you if you g= et divorced, absent a prenup that specifies otherwise. Even assets that you= =E2=80=99d probably assume would be =E2=80=9Cseparate=E2=80=9D can be unint= entionally commingled.

For example, you might have bought a home be= fore you got married=E2=80=94that=E2=80=99s your =E2=80=9Cseparate property= .=E2=80=9D But if you and your partner begin paying that mortgage with inco= me that=E2=80=99s considered marital property=E2=80=94as most people are go= ing to do=E2=80=94that asset now becomes marital property, too.

If = you=E2=80=99re saving aggressively and your spouse is forwarding every payc= heck to DraftKings, an eventual divorce (particularly in a community proper= ty state) means they=E2=80=99ll likely be entitled to something like half o= f your savings.

This is why having shared financial goals matters: = = Because keeping totally separate finances in marriage is a little bit of= an illusion. Things might be physically separate, but le= gally, it=E2=80=99s a different story.=C2=A0

The goal with managing= your money in marriage is to make progress as a team, while at the same ti= me protecting one another from a worst-case scenario.

For example, = you might decide that you want to use joint checking and investment account= s for your shared spending and goals, but you should also write a prenuptia= l or postnuptial agreement that specifies what would happen if your marriag= e ends someday. (What=E2=80=99s more loving than deciding=E2=80=94at the ti= me when you=E2=80=99re feeling most optimistic about your future=E2=80=94wh= at you want to guarantee one another has in life, even if it=E2=80=99s not = together?)=C2=A0

Women over 65 are 56% more likely to find themse= lves in poverty following a divorce, in no small part bec= ause women are more likely to leave paid work to provide care for a family = member, so prenups become especially critical if you want the option someda= y to leave paid work to care for your family.

Prenups can specify s= pousal support that a stay-at-home parent would be entitled to (and for how= long) if the marriage ends, which is particularly important if you=E2=80= =99re out of the workforce for a long time, because not only does being out= of the workforce mean no opportunity to save for your own retirement, but = it also means zeroes in the Social Security records.=C2=A0

Money = is about optionality, including the option to end a relationship= , and taking reasonable, mutually protective measures at the outset = can minimize the financial fallout so you can make the choice as freely as = possible=E2=80=94that=E2=80=99s why I spend all of Chapters 4 and 5 of <= a class=3D"link" href=3D"https://link.mail.beehiiv.com/ss/c/u001._gLBeL1bcG= 9mwzlzpTcy22Dzi6zncH7np8MuNG1eUkTUNRFbUVKirftY8I6_OUNNcrfljzUe6ovB3YuEDOv4r= 3n9o5Oc6_eDhyNrAZmqFUkD7O_HhWNpu0TbgtCoI-TQ5OJIa2h4bTeGW_Nqm-n97cgWgX4IYCRw= wk4UwgZWVWyJL3cBAa6ytUuTJrsBQ3pEUjToT_aymHDodbwSg1bnyIIv1icsHGz_FPqanK9DOjo= xGGf0VE8qwt4j3MOWrn2EMQguIo2IacDJ0MjgJClo5qsxMxn1xSj4Z-0ItNStUX4/4h7/nfz-1r= gWRCe9B1ZiuBb5tQ/h33/h001.kL1P7XfgYLveZZbN3PkZmbatHVJowOyOVlTqE29qnX4" targ= et=3D"_blank" rel=3D"noopener noreferrer nofollow">Rich Girl Nation talking about how the statistics indicate marriage and childr= en are most likely to impact your financial health.=E2=80=9D
