Swings in= South Korea=E2=80=99s foreign policy are not unusual, especially following= a change in government. But the current change could be especially dramati= c. South Korea=E2=80=99s newly elected President Lee Jae-myung has advocate= d for reconciliation with China and North Korea, expressed hostility toward= Japan, and called for greater independence in the alliance with the U.S.

In today's to= p story, Martin K=C3=B6lling explains that Lee's position lies in stark con= trast to his disgraced predecessor Yoon Suk Yeol, who was impeached earlier= this year. Yoon pushed through a trilateral alliance with the U.S. and nei= ghboring Japan and distanced himself from China and North Korea.

Even though L= ee has apparently pivoted from some of the positions he held as leader of t= he opposition party, how he ultimately decides to move forward as president= is not trivial, K=C3=B6lling argues. South Korea is a potential flashpoint= in the discord between China and the U.S., and Lee views South Korea as an= important player in other conflicts between major powers.

Lee appears to b= e taking a pragmatic approach so far, K=C3=B6lling writes, and he seems to = be adapting to the new geopolitical reality: escalating tensions between Ch= ina and the U.S., an emboldened North Korea, and U.S. import tariffs.
